Part 2: 1962 - 2002

Introduction

Included below are references to posters produced during 1984-5 in association with the release of the Georgio Moroder version of the film, along with more recent reproductions of original posters from the 1920s and 1930s, plus adaptations. The posters are arranged chronologically. Included in Part 1 of this listing are references to posters produced in association with the film's initial release in 1927. Subsequent 're-issue' release posters are reproduced below. The posters are arranged chronologically in both parts.

23. Metropolis - German re-issue, Berlin, 1962. A poster publicising the first modern re-issue of a 'reconstructed' version of Metropolis. Features a 1940s era image of Heinrich George.


24. Metropolis - German re-issue, Berlin, 1962, Lobby Card. Freder attempting to release a grate which is trapping the children below ground in the flood waters.


25. Metropolis - German re-issue, Berlin, 1962, Lobby Card. Freder and Maria embracing within the catacombs.

30. Metropolis - Georgio Moroder Version, Poster, 47 x 63 inches, France, 1984. A smaller version (17 x 22 inches) is also known.


31. Metropolis - Georgio Moroder version, Poster, 30 x 40 inches, London, 1984. Produced to publicise the movie soundtrack, released on the Reprise label through Virgin stores.







32. Metropolis - Georgio Moroder Version, Poster, 26 x 38 inches, 1984. Numerous variants of this basic design exist, along with a number of reprints. Known variants include:

  • German one sheet poster, 23 1/2 x 32 inches, 1984.
  • Australian daybill, 14 x 30 inches, 1984.
  • Australian one sheet poster, 27 x 41 inches, 1984.
  • French door panel, 23 x 63 inches, 1984.
  • Italian re-release insert, 13 x 27 inches, 1984.
  • Italian one sheet poster, 39 x 55 inches, 1984.

46. Metropolis, postcards, 4.5 x 6.5 inches, series of 9. Featuring original production illustrations and set design drawings by Erich kettelhut (7) plus 2 posters. Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek, Berlin, 1990s.




47. Metropolis - Stamps. Two Metropolis-related stamp issues are known: 1. Nicaragua 1994 and 2. Germany - 100th Anniversary of Film series, 1995.


48. Metropolis Robot, wax print, 1995, 8.5 x 10.5 inches.


49. Superman's Metropolis, DC Comics Elseworlds Series, 22 x 33.5 inches, 1996. Promotional poster for new comic book, being an adaptation of metropolis with Clarke Kent as the main character.


50. Metropolis, poster, 1996. Modern reproduction. This work is also available in the form of acrylic paint on board, simulating an original painting.


51. Metropolis - Led Zeppelin, Flag/Poster on silken cloth, 30 x 43 inches, 1998. This image is also available on a T-shirt. Official item.


52. Concert poster - Bob Dylan and Van Morrison at Maddison Square Garden, January 1998. Based on original 1927 Metropolis poster.




53. Oscar Poster, March 2000, 26.75 x 39.75 inches. Designer: Arnold Schwartzman. Tribute to Metropolis and the robot transformation scene (reproduced below), wherein the rings were a major feature. Quote: "Its vivid electric design offers a look forward into the new millennium while at the same time paying homageto one of film history's most memorable images from the 1926 silent classic Metropolis."
