1926 Berlin Censor's Office - Intertitle Cards

Introduction

An important resource in the study of Fritz Lang's Metropolis and efforts to reconstruct the film as originally released, is the 1926 Berlin Censor's Office intertitle card listing. This document was based on the version of Metropolis submitted to that office during November of 1926 by director Lang and UFA. A detailed transcription of the original German language document is included in the table below, along with an approximate English translation (the original text is in bold). This November 1926 version of Metropolis may hereinafter be referred to as 'the director's cut', though Fritz Lang was known to work on his films right up to the time of their premiere, cutting and re-editing the various reels and altering intertitles.

This document was printed in Gothic script on 11 small (circa 5 x 5 1/2 inch) cards by the Censor's Office. It is dated 'Berlin, 13 November 1926.' The cards list production details, cast and crew, intertitle text, plus length of each reel of film as submitted by Lang. We therefore know from the cards that, for example, reel 5 contained 19 intertitles and was 363 metres long - this equates to a running time of approximately 19 minutes 42 seconds at 16 frames per second. Within the following table the German text of the intertitles cards is reproduced, along with approximate English translation, plus details of reel numbers, card numbers, and reel length. Also included - in the final column - is reference to the corresponding scene in Thea von Harbou's novelisation of Metropolis (Donning, Norfolk, Virginia, 1988, 170p). In many instances the actual intertitle card text is identical to that found in the novel, whilst on other occasions there is no correlation.

The November 1926 version of the film ran to a total of 4189 metres, or approximately 228 minutes at 16 frames per second. Nine reels of varying length were viewed by the Censor's Office, with some 196 individual intertitles noted. The printed intertitle cards do not indicate who is the speaker of various phrases, or if the words are actually spoken or mere descriptive text or graphics. However, within the table below, speaker names have been included where known, based on information gathered from viewing modern video editions of the film, and more especially the 1995 reconstructed version of Metropolis produced by Enno Patalas for the Munich FilmMuseum and recently released on video in France. Within that latter version some of the original intertitle cards were not used, whilst their sequence was also altered slightly. Some confusion in this area remains due to the major cutting and reediting of the film early in 1927 by the American team under Channing Pollock. It is obvious from a reading of the cards that Pollock excised a large section of reel 5, along with all reference to the Hel sub-plot, various religious elements, the Slim - Josaphat encounter, Georgy's encounter with Yosiwara, and various salacious elements.

The Intertitle Cards are a significant resource in our attempts to reconstruct Fritz Lang's original verison of Metropolis.
